Well, I've heard that George Washington story before, and I second it.
But I think it's there for when people like Bush take office. He asks for God's help, because he can't possibly do it himself.
But it looks like God isn't helping him, because he's ended up violating several articles of the Constitution, and supposedly said that the COnstitution was "just a Godd*mn piece of paper!"
Thanks so much for the background semper fi. I must say I appreciate the historical significance of the verse. I do take exception with your ending, "are best handled with some divine help". It is at this point I have difficulty with the addition of God into the oath. Not all believe in this divinity you allude to.
I know that other parts of the oath can be waived. I wonder if this "so help me God" could also be waived if desired.
I know the quote "just a Godd*mn piece of paper" has been running around various chat rooms and blog sites. I'm not sure if is substantiated that the quote is truly attributable to George Bush. It seems it could just be one of those urban legends. Who is the original source of the quote?
BTW oregondemocrat101 recieved your email. Thanks for the kind words and support.
The original auth or was Dave Thompson, who runs a site called Capitol Hill Blue. He says that for each story to be posted, there must be two independent, variable sources. I emailed him to ask about the sources, but have not recieved word back!
The story was also carrie by another site I had never heard of.
I posted the story on my site, but I'm seriously considering pulling the story. I searched the comment online, and some says it's read, other's say it isn't. Who knows!
